In the Master’s degree in Materials Science, you deepen your basic knowledge from the Bachelor’s degree in the first year of study. At the same time, knowledge and skills are built up in two specialization subjects, which lead to the current state of research. The excellent infrastructure of the University of Stuttgart enables a wide range of specialization subjects.
In the second year of study, you will then carry out your own research project (master's thesis) on one of these specialization subjects in one of the numerous materials science working groups. Experience has shown that you study in this field of study in an international environment, as many of your fellow students come from abroad.
Degree in a bachelor's degree program lasting at least six semesters (or an equivalent degree)

Admission with conditions
In the case of admission with conditions, you will be admitted, but you must catch up on certain examinations from the bachelor's degree before you register for the master's thesis. This can be the case, for example, if you completed your bachelor's degree at another university or a university of applied sciences and did not take seminars or modules there that you need for the master’s degree at the University of Stuttgart. The final decision as to whether your professional aptitude is recognized as sufficient is made by the admissions committee .
Graduated from a university of applied sciences
A degree from a university of applied sciences (formerly a university of applied sciences) or the Baden-Wuerttemberg Cooperative State University basically entitles you to study for a master’s degree at a university, according to the State University Act.
Admission restriction (NC)
In master’s courses in which the number of study places is limited (Numerus Clausus (NC)), ranking lists are created for the allocation of study places based on the criteria that are a prerequisite for admission to the master’s course. The admission regulations for the relevant master’s degree program regulate further details.
Apart from the admission with conditions, there are other variants of admission depending on the subject:
The courses of the degree program are usually held in English, so you should have very good knowledge of the English language (level C1):
For German school leavers, proof of five years of teaching English at secondary level I and II with a school grade of at least 4.0 in the last two years is sufficient.
Otherwise you will need one of the following language certificates: TOEFL PBT: at least 575 points; TOEFL CBT at least 225 points; TOEFL iBT at least 90 points; IELTS at least band 6.5; Cambridge ESOL CAE / CPE;
Graduates from English-language Bachelor’s degree programs require a certificate from the university at which the Bachelor’s degree was obtained.
The degree opens up a broad professional field of activity, which ranges from material selection and advice to quality assurance. It qualifies you to work independently in industrial research and basic research at public institutions.
Various job descriptions and job information can be found in the BERUFENET database of the Federal Employment Agency:
Around half of all Master’s graduates do a doctorate and qualify for independent research tasks and managerial tasks through a doctorate. In contrast to chemists, for example, a doctorate is not absolutely necessary for a successful career in materials science. Similar to engineers, the employment opportunities for materials scientists are very promising even without a doctorate. However, if you want to pursue an academic career or work in a public research institute, a doctorate is essential. The strong academic environment in Stuttgart creates ideal conditions for a doctorate and thus for the start of an academic career.
