This interdisciplinary bachelor's degree combines both humanities and social science content in the following three sub-areas: The
subject of historyis the source-based investigation of the human past. On the one hand, you will deal with specific events and the role of individuals and, on the other hand, you will analyze developments spanning decades or centuries with the help of a subject-specific methodology. The spectrum of your discussion ranges from the Middle Ages to the modern age. In this way you will, for example, familiarize yourself with the great empires of antiquity, the ideological and religious upheavals of the Reformation, and finally with the development of the nation states.
The Political Scienceresearches the dynamics and processes of different social actors in the field of tension between the state, economy and civil society. Her main focus in the course is on the analysis of power structures as well as legitimation and decision-making processes on a national and international level. You will discuss classic texts from the history of political ideas, consider political systems and the structure of modern administrative systems and relate your findings to current trends such as globalization.
Main task of sociologyon the other hand is the investigation of the conditions, mechanisms and conflicts of the coexistence of people in social groups. Using qualitative as well as quantitative methods, different forms of interaction should be made transparent and interpreted. The focus is on the sub-areas of the discipline established at the University of Potsdam: The basics and methods of general sociology, gender sociology, organizational and administrative sociology, youth and family sociology, empirical social research and social structure analysis are dealt with.
The natural intersections of these three areas of science enable you to view complex historical and social phenomena from multiple perspectives and to penetrate them critically.
