Scandinavian Studies deals with the literatures and cultures of the Scandinavian countries from the Middle Ages to the present - both in the national and transnational Scandinavian area. The focus of the subject in Bonn is on medieval and more recent Scandinavian literary and cultural studies as well as on consolidating language skills in the respective national languages ??(Danish, Swedish and Norwegian). A comparative perspective is pursued, looking at the entire Scandinavian region. The aim is to understand the (socio-) cultural developments and processes in the Scandinavian countries and, in particular, to follow the German-Scandinavian cultural transfer from a historical and current perspective.

The basic specialist knowledge acquired is systematically deepened in the master’s program and applied to subject-specific research subjects. The course is particularly geared towards imparting intercultural competence, with a central focus on the inter-Scandinavian dimension of linguistic, literary and cultural phenomena. The interdisciplinary study of German and comparative modules enables an interdisciplinary networking of research questions from a pan-European perspective.
