The course in modern music and sound cultures focuses on the questions of configurations and concepts of music and sound as well as the practices, discourses, media and their place in modern societies in the context of globalization. "Modern" is to be understood here in the sociological-historical sense as modernity - in contrast to aesthetic-artistic modernism - and goes back to around 1800. In this sense, the focus is less on certain types of music, but more on the social, cultural, technological and media history conditions and processes (e.g. industrialization and mediatization) under which people practice music, produce sound and are shaped by both.

The students deepen their knowledge of music and sound science and learn to critically question the limits of technical theories and discourses. In addition, they expand their methodological skills, which enable them to independently develop scientific ideas and implement them in self-organized research projects. By dealing with aspects of musical globalization, they are also sensitized to intercultural communication.
