The English-language, international and interdisciplinary degree program Dependency and Slavery Studies is aimed at students with historical, material and / or social science majors and interests and is designed for four semesters. Based on the new research concept of “strong asymmetrical dependency”, the master’s degree opens up new approaches to the study and research of slavery and other forms of strong asymmetrical dependency from an interdisciplinary perspective. When examining deep social dependency relationships such as slavery, serfdom, debt bondage and other forms of dependency across epochs, regions and cultures, the focus is not on the modern world, but on its diverse prehistory in Asian, American, African and European societies - to break away from the contrast “slavery versus freedom”. In order to take the topic into account in various contemporary contexts, the course offers insights into current phenomena of extreme asymmetrical relationships to a lesser extent.

The students are enabled to classify current research questions across disciplines and to independently solve complex problems while expanding their methodological and analytical skills. The transcultural comparison is seen as a central aspect of scientific research into slavery and other forms of dependency.
