As a structural science or the science of formal systems, mathematics aims to prove statements about mathematical structures and objects according to the principle of logic. In applied mathematics in particular, experimentation and empirical knowledge are aids and impetus for formulating such statements. On the basis of such statements or basic assumptions (axioms) assumed to be true, theories should also be built up that can be transferred and applied to as many different real conditions as possible.

In order to be able to make these generally valid assumptions, basic techniques of mathematical work are taught using analytical, algebraic and algorithmic methods. In order to be able to pass on these methods and ways of thinking to students, extensive specialist didactic knowledge is also imparted. In elective areas, general and teaching-specific modules are offered, which serve to deepen mathematical skills on the one hand and pedagogical skills on the other.

Two subjects are studied in the teaching post for grammar schools and comprehensive schools. In addition to mathematics, a second subject and educational sciences are also taken.
