Overview

As a classical linguistic and literary studies, the course deals with Greek and Roman antiquity and their diverse after-effects on language, literature and culture. Topics and questions from history, philosophy, religion and myth are illuminated.

The texts of antiquity, which are fundamental to the identity of Europe, and the important milestones in their history of impact are considered to be an important basis for this discussion. The intensive preoccupation with Greek and Latin literature always takes place in the historical context from antiquity through the Middle Ages to modern times. In relation to this, great emphasis is placed on solid language skills in Greek and Latin. These are essential for the translation and understanding of the original texts.

Research in Bonn focuses on philological and editorial work as well as dealing with the history of reception of Greek and Latin texts and the history of their transmission. Another research focus relates to the application of modern literary theories to historical texts. In the compulsory elective area, it is possible to pursue your own main interests.
