Tibetology deals with a clearly delimited cultural area in the middle of Asia, from Baltistan (Pakistan) via Ladakh, Spiti, Lahul, Kinnaur, Sikkim, Tawang (all located in India), Tibetan settlement areas of Nepal, Bhutan, to the Tibetan settlement areas from China ranges. In Bonn, students can acquire solid and broad basic knowledge of the history, culture and language of the entire Tibetan-speaking cultural area. These make it possible to get to know the Tibetan cultural area in the past and present, but also to examine and assess topics such as art and literature, religions, politics and science independently and critically on the basis of original language sources.

The Institute for Oriental and Asian Studies (IOA) organizes excursions and a Tibet Colloquium, to which the IOA invites scientists to exchange ideas on ongoing projects in Tibet-related research.
