Overview

The bachelor's degree in German Studies consists of the three areas of Modern German Literature, German Medieval Studies and German Linguistics. It enables students to study literature and linguistics in all its specialist areas.

Modern German literary studies is concerned with research into German-language literature and its history from the early modern period to the present (1600 to the present day). Due to the cultural studies orientation of the department, media studies issues and interdisciplinary cooperation with other subjects are also important.

The German Medieval Studies in turn researches the beginnings of German literature in the Middle Ages and the early modern period (800 to 1600). The aim is, in particular, to make mediaeval texts from the time comprehensible in their cultural-historical depth and to impart language skills and a feeling for the language of that time to the students.

The subject of German linguistics is the German language in all its facets: the contemporary language, but also earlier language levels such as Old, Middle and Early New High German. Linguistics examines, for example, the historical change in language, norms and rules as well as deviations and variations that can be regional, age-specific or caused by multilingualism. The Bonn linguistics specializes in morphosyntax, language change, conversation analysis and text linguistics.
