Overview

The Master of Science in Mechanical Engineering course deepens and expands the knowledge and skills of analysis, conception, simulation, optimization and construction of technical systems. In addition to the classic lectures and exercises, the course also includes application-related forms of learning, including a practical mechanical engineering tutorial and industry-related advanced design projects, through which initial experience in basic and applied research can be gained. In the project area, it is also possible to choose a twelve-week external project work in the industry and thus bring the theoretical knowledge to the professional world during the course.

Due to the great freedom of choice in the master’s degree, the students decide for themselves whether they want to study broadly in general mechanical engineering or decide on one of the four specializations offered:

  • Sustainable Use of Resources
  • Clean Energy and Process Engineering
  • Future Automotive Systems
  • Digital Based Production and Robotics

CAREER PROSPECTS

Mechanical engineering is one of the leading branches of industry in Germany. A similar picture emerges from an international perspective: Mechanical engineers are in demand as specialists around the world.

You mainly take on the development, design, planning and construction of technical systems and machines . Accordingly, they work primarily in mechanical and plant engineering or in their supplier companies or in engineering offices.

Depending on the focus of their studies, they deal with vehicle technology, production technology, energy technology, fluid mechanics, aerospace technology, product development or mechatronics . This list only reflects a selection of the many possibilities.

Employers for graduates in mechanical engineering can be, for example, industrial groups, engine manufacturers, monitoring and testing institutions, engineering offices, consulting companies or the automotive industry.

But other than the classic career paths are also conceivable for mechanical engineers. Examples of this would be technology journalism or technology communication .

It is therefore important, in addition to studying, to gain practical experience in relevant institutions at an early stage, to prove one's general suitability for practice and to establish contacts. The prospect of a good position is increased by the willingness to move professionally, also abroad. A good command of the English language is particularly recommended if you have an international focus.
