The Master course of study teaches candidates advanced information, skills, and methods in the subject of Biomedical Engineering, and thus guides them to higher scientific qualification and independence in this field.

Programme Structure


Interdisciplinary Courses

The Faculty of Mathematics, Computer Science, and Natural Sciences, the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering, the Faculty of Electrical Engineering and Information Technology, and the Faculty of Medicine are involved in the courses, specifically designed for this course of study.

First Semester

In the first semester, modules from medicine, engineering, and natural sciences are offered, from which a suitable combination of subjects must be completed, depending on a student's Bachelor. This balances the varying entrance qualifications of the students and creates a common platform for further semesters.

Second and Third Semester – The Aachen Profile

The focus modules "Tissue Engineering, "Medical Imaging/Guided Therapy“, and "Artificial Organs/Devices“ are chosen to reflect the characterstic Aachen profile in the biomedical engineering field of research. Other components of the curriculum are mandatory modules and optional additional modules. Students with no German skills are required to participate in a German course. EU students with good German skills are required to take place in an English course.

Fourth Semester

The fourth semester is reserved for writing the Master thesis.

  • First university degree, required qualifications according to the examination regulations
  • Proficiency in English

Numerous fields are open to graduates, including: medical technology industry, healthcare, research laboratories, testing centers, authorities, universities, and self-employment.

Your tasks range from research, development, production, product consulting, distribution and service of medical products to planning, project management, quality management, certification, and instruction of implementation of medical technology and biomaterials to observation and assessment of medical instititutions, processes, and equipment.
