Studying the master’s degree in mathematics leads to a deepening and specialization in mathematics as well as in the minor subject and leads in particular to an intensification of independent scientific work.

The course is more research-oriented. Students can, however, emphasize the practical relevance by setting individual priorities. The in-depth study in a minor guarantees that the use of mathematical methods is also reflected in an interdisciplinary context.


The in-depth lectures, seminars or internships are usually completed in the work areas represented in the department. These are

  • Algebraic Lie Theory
  • Algebraic and Complex Geometry
  • Differential Geometry and Analysis
  • Discrete Math
  • Numerical math and optimization
  • Stochastics

There is a wide range of subjects to choose from when choosing a minor. The most frequently chosen subjects are:

Business administration, biology, geography, computer science, physics, economics.


The fields of activity for mathematicians are very diverse and predominantly interdisciplinary. There are excellent career prospects due to continuously developing new fields of activity in which a sound mathematical knowledge is required. Often, interesting, non-subject tasks are also carried out very successfully, as abstract-logical skills to analyze a problem and lead to a solution are also of great use in other areas and this particularly encourages innovation processes.

Graduates of the master’s degree in mathematics can be found outside of universities and research institutions in all areas of industry and business. Mathematicians are particularly sought after in software development, in banks, insurance companies and management consultancies.

A particularly successful master’s degree also gives you access to a doctorate - primarily in mathematics.



Proof of completion of a relevant bachelor's degree in the field of "Mathematics" or proof of a comparable domestic or foreign professional university degree. In addition to the bachelor's degree in mathematics, a qualification for teaching at grammar schools (first state examination or master’s) with mathematics as a subject entitles you to access. A bachelor's degree in another discipline entitles the holder to access if at least 90 CP have been completed in modules in which competencies at the level of the basic and compulsory modules of the Marburg bachelor's degree in mathematics have been acquired. The university degree qualifying for a profession must be assessed with at least an overall grade of 7.9 grade points or at least a grade of 3.0 (in accordance with Section 28 of the General Provisions).

If this is not yet available, a transcript of records with a calculated average grade based on at least 80% of the credit points required for the Bachelor's degree can be submitted.

The examination board can combine the admission with the condition that additional study achievements and / or examinations of a maximum of 30 credit points are achieved. In this case, the course can be extended accordingly.
