Overview

The aim of the master's degree in business mathematics is to deepen and expand the specialist skills acquired in the bachelor's degree in business mathematics or mathematics. In addition to advanced courses in mathematics, economics and computer science, you will be introduced to independent scientific work in the master’s program. You study current research literature and work on a problem from business mathematics scientifically as part of your master's thesis.

ENTRY REQUIREMENTS

Proof of completion of a specific bachelor's degree in “Business Mathematics” or evidence of completing a relevant bachelor's degree in “Mathematics” or evidence of a comparable domestic or foreign professional university degree.
In addition to a bachelor's degree in business mathematics or mathematics, a qualification for teaching at grammar schools (first state examination or master’s) with mathematics as a subject entitles you to access. A bachelor's degree in another discipline entitles the holder to access if at least 90 CP have been completed in modules in which competencies at the level of the basic and compulsory modules of the Marburg bachelor's degree in business mathematics have been acquired. The university degree qualifying for a profession must be passed with an overall grade of 7.9 grade points or better or at least a grade of 3.0 (in accordance with Section 28 of the General Provisions).

If proof of the first degree is not yet available, a transcript of records with a calculated average grade based on at least 80% of the credit points required for the bachelor's degree can be submitted.

The examination board can combine the admission with the condition that additional study achievements and / or examinations of a maximum of 30 credit points are achieved. In this case, the course can be extended accordingly.

Proof of course-specific knowledge and skills:

Knowledge of the English language according to  language level B2 of  the "Common European Framework of Reference for Languages ??of the Council of Europe" is strongly recommended. 

Approval mode:

Direct admission is granted if the admission requirements are fully met.

 

CAREER PROSPECTS

The field of activity for business mathematicians is broad and similar to that of economists. 

A successfully completed master’s degree qualifies you

  • to independent mathematical work in industry and economy,
  • to manage projects that involve analyzing, modeling and solving scientific, economic or technical problems,
  • on planning, development and research tasks in scientific and public institutions
  • to work as a research assistant or research assistant at a university,
  • for access to a doctorate.

The career prospects for business mathematicians are generally good! Graduates of the department can be found in the insurance and credit industry, management consulting, information technology or in universities and research institutes.
