The master's degree in "Religious Studies" gives you a reflective approach to the complexity of religious phenomena in the past and present in different sociocultural contexts. The aim of the course is to be able to analyze the role and function of religions for the shaping of individual living environments, but also of collective affiliations and their significance for local and global conflict situations.

Contrary to the assumption of a progressive loss of importance of religions, it is very clear that religions are also an essential element of social and political life in the present.


The Master’s degree in Religious Studies enables specializations in the field of religious cultures in Europe and Asia as well as in the field of Islamic cultures.

The various facets of contemporary religious culture as well as the past and present of Islam, Hinduism or Buddhism can be possible focal points.

Due to the choice of minor in related disciplines such as Islamic Studies, Indology / Tibetology or also the social and cultural sciences as well as study opportunities in the Center for Near and Middle Eastern Studies, in Protestant theology, social sciences and peace and conflict research, an individual focus formation as well as the Acquisition of necessary language skills possible.


With the master’s degree, you are qualified to bring your knowledge of different religious traditions into social debates and interreligious areas of conflict in a differentiating and mediating way.

Various activities are available, for example in libraries and documentation centers, in public museums and free exhibitions and in publishing houses as well as in the field of politics and culture.

Quite a few graduates work in industries such as journalism, cultural and foreign work, cultural (conflict) advice and intercultural communication, etc., but also work for international institutions and organizations.

Already during your studies you set the direction for your professional future with your major, stays abroad, internships, etc.

In addition, the master's degree in "Religious Studies" enables research and teaching at universities and research institutions in Germany and abroad.

In some federal states, the subject is also relevant for the teaching profession, provided that the subjects of religion and ethics are provided in addition to denominational religious instruction.



Evidence of the completion of a relevant bachelor's degree in the field of religious studies or evidence of a comparable domestic or foreign professional university degree.

If proof of the first degree is not yet available, a transcript of records with a calculated average grade based on at least 80% of the credit points required for the bachelor's degree can be submitted.

The examination board can combine the admission with the condition that additional study achievements and / or examinations of a maximum of 30 credit points are achieved. In this case, the course can be extended accordingly.

Two foreign languages. Must be proven

  • Knowledge of English at level B 2 of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages  as well
  • Knowledge of another foreign language, namely
    • either knowledge of a modern foreign language at level B1 of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages
    • or knowledge of an ancient language or language that is necessary for researching specific regions, religious communities or sources of religious history.
