The multidisciplinary English-language course "Peace and Conflict Studies" is carried out in cooperation with the University of Kent. The students spend one academic year each in Canterbury and Marburg and upon successful completion they receive an MA in Peace and Conflict Studies (Joint Degree) from the Philipps University of Marburg and the University of Kent.
The subject of the course is conflicts and peace processes in international change. In it, students should acquire in-depth specialist knowledge of peace and conflict research as well as the ability to research and analyze conflicts in a national and international context, to develop conflict resolution options and to participate in conflict resolution themselves.

The compulsory modules include the topics of conflict theories, conflict management, conflict analysis and intergroup conflicts as well as an internship of at least ten weeks.



Evidence of the completion of a relevant bachelor's degree or evidence of a comparable domestic or foreign university degree qualifying for a profession.

Proof of course-specific knowledge and skills:

A very good knowledge of the English language must be proven, provided that English is not the mother tongue. Permissible evidence, such as IELTS, will be announced by the University of Kent in a suitable form in good time.

The study of peace and conflict research enables professional activity in a wide range of professional fields. Depending on the individual focus, e.g. through the choice of international internship, through conflict analyzes according to special perspectives, the master’s thesis, etc., practicing a profession is conceivable in the following fields, for example:

  • Science (university, research institutions, especially in interdisciplinary and international research contexts)
  • Civil conflict management (e.g. non-governmental organizations)
  • State institutions and organizations (e.g. in the field of conflict management)
  • Conflict mediation / conflict management
  • Policy advice, organizational advice
  • Media (including publishers) and public relations
  • Economy (industry, business, self-employed / private services).
