Overview

The subject of the study of historical-comparative linguistics is the Indo-European language family. The aim of this discipline is to determine the relationship that exists between the languages ??belonging to this language strain and to gain insights into the differentiation processes that have led to the languages ??spoken today. Historical-comparative linguistics prefers to focus on the earliest tangible levels of individual languages ??and tries to capture their linguistic evidence as precisely as possible, to describe the phonetic systems and grammatical structures in detail, to collect vocabulary and to determine the meanings of words. Words and grammatical forms are also examined for their etymology.

In addition to extensive training in historical-comparative (Indo-European) linguistics, Marburg also offers a specialization in Anatolian studies (Hittitology) and typological-comparative linguistics.
