The master's degree in German-language literature offers you further academic qualification and profiling in the field of German literature. The international standards of general literary studies are applied to the subject area of ??German literature from the Middle Ages to the 21st century: to processes of their historical changes and differentiations, to their intercultural entanglements, to their interdependencies with other subsystems of society (economy, politics, law , Art, religion, philosophy, etc.) as well as their social functions and cultural achievements.

As a science that analyzes textual and linguistic communication processes and thereby systematically incorporates phases of one's own cultural development that have become partially alien from a historical perspective, German literature studies also aims to enable graduates of the degree program to reflect on experiences of cultural foreignness, relativize current patterns of perception and normative orientation and at the same time apply verifiable procedures with which historical phenomena can be appropriately recorded, explained and presented

With the specialist focus and supplementary modules as well as research and practice-oriented project modules, the course offers opportunities for further academic specialization in the areas of older German or newer German literature as well as in practice-oriented areas of application of literature communication in the media, in which there is a special focus outside of school and university Qualified handling of the German language, literature and culture is required.

Use where a particularly qualified handling of the German language, literature and culture is required outside of school and university. This includes scientific and managerial activities, for example in

  • Libraries (higher service),

  • Literary archives,

  • cultural history museums and

  • University-related research institutions (academies, commissions and corresponding foundations).

The core area also includes the traditional field of print media (newspaper and magazine editors, publishing and book trade), which is currently opening up new digital publication options. In addition, German scholars work in press and public relations, in cultural management, in adult education and in science administration.
