The predominantly application-oriented master’s course "German as a Foreign Language" prepares for the profession of a "German as a Foreign Language" teacher for adults at home and abroad. It is aimed at students who are pursuing this career aspiration and also aims to train and promote young academics in the field of foreign language didactics and language teaching and learning research. The course was designed for students who have acquired a German or foreign bachelor's degree or an equivalent in German studies or a related course and who can prove sufficient German language skills for the profession of "German as a foreign language" teacher.

The content required for this profession and imparted in this degree program is primarily:

  • a comprehensive knowledge of the German language to be taught in its linguistic description and in one's own command of the language
  • a good knowledge of language, literature and regional studies didactics for DaF lessons
  • a thorough knowledge of teaching and learning principles for language learning, including the methods and results of language teaching research
  • a reflected practice of language teaching that is acquired in supervised internships.

The course provides the necessary theoretical, methodological and practical knowledge as well as skills for classroom communication and teamwork.

  • linguistic studies
  • Studies in regional studies and literature mediation
  • Studies in language teaching research, psycholinguistics and didactics

You can set an additional focus yourself as part of the compulsory elective modules. You can choose between a more intensive examination of aspects of teaching practice, an in-depth study of teaching material analysis and a thorough deepening of the methods and projects of language teaching research and psycholinguistics. The latter is of particular interest if you plan to do a doctorate after completing your master’s degree. It happens quite often that the master's thesis is followed by a content-related dissertation.
