The master's degree in "Classical Philology" provides you with well-founded content-related and methodological skills in the field of ancient literature and the consolidation of the language skills required for this. The entirety of this knowledge should enable you to work independently in the field of classical philology, to familiarize yourself with philological issues, to analyze them critically and systematically and to open up new fields of research.

The study of classical philology is shaped

  • from the reflective use of language,
  • from the careful linguistic and content analysis of highly complex texts,
  • From the paradigmatic individual interpretation on the one hand and the creation and systematic treatment of larger problem contexts on the other hand,
  • Independent research and group work, including the presentation of the results obtained.

The course is research-oriented and also prepares you for a possible doctorate.

In accordance with the research focus of the Marburg Classical Philology, the degree program offers a thorough training in both classical languages, dealing with the canonical texts of antiquity, on which the European cultural traditions are based in the sciences, literature, the arts and philosophy, as well as with the historical contextualization of these texts and their reception.
