Overview

Chemists decipher complex chemical relationships, their functions and interactions. They further develop materials and technology and thus create the prerequisites for responsible use of the environment. Today this means exploring new ways of generating energy, using increasingly scarce raw materials more efficiently, tapping new raw material sources and developing new types of materials, but also identifying harmful substances and dangerous natural substances.

The bachelor's degree in chemistry at the University of Potsdam primarily imparts knowledge of the subject matter of animate (organic) and inanimate nature (inorganic). The training includes both theoretical and numerous practical parts of the course and is closely related to research. The course content initially includes courses in basic mathematical and natural science disciplines and in the sub-areas of chemistry, including general, inorganic, organic, physical, analytical and theoretical chemistry. There is also a specialization in two elective subjects. You can choose from, for example, bio-organic chemistry, solid-state, colloid and polymer chemistry, environmental chemistry and computational chemistry

The bachelor's degree in chemistry is designed as a single-subject bachelor's degree. The bachelor's degree has a modular structure. Within the modules, the course content is thematically summarized in different study and teaching forms. In each module, certain study and examination achievements have to be achieved

ENTRY REQUIREMENTS

If you want to start studying chemistry, good math skills are an important requirement. You can refresh your mathematics skills shortly before your studies in a bridging course offered by the university. In general, it is helpful for a successful degree if you have a good command of German and English.

CAREER PROSPECTS

With the bachelor's degree, you acquire well-founded and ready-to-use knowledge of modern chemistry, including the basics of natural science. You will also learn a scientific way of thinking and basic research-related skills.

The bachelor's degree in chemistry provides the basis for various activities in chemical and chemical-technological companies, research institutions, authorities and associations. Chemists work in the chemical and pharmaceutical industries, in mineral, plastic and rubber, printing inks and detergents - as well as in the electrical, metal, construction and automotive industries. Overall, this branch is currently one of the most important branches of the economy. Further professional perspectives are offered in environmental and patent law, environmental analysis and adult education.
