The bachelor's degree in Spanish combines course content from Spanish Philology with subject-didactic and teaching content. At the Institute for Romance Studies at the University of Potsdam there is also the option of studying the bachelor's degree French for teaching. Both subjects are structured similarly in terms of content. The teaching-related bachelor's degree in Spanish is divided into the areas of language practice, language, literature and cultural studies and subject didactics. The courses and exercises on language practice aim at active verbal and written command of the language. In contrast, the focus of linguistics is on the systematic description of the grammar, the sound structure and vocabulary of Spanish as well as the history and variation of this language and its use in texts and conversations.Within the literary studies, literary historical, theoretical and analytical issues are addressed. The cultural context to which the Spanish language and literature belong, as well as basic cultural theories and methods are the subject of cultural studies. As part of the subject didactics, the basics of foreign language and Spanish didactics are finally imparted. Practical school studies offer the opportunity to practically test, reflect and develop skills relating to the planning and design of lessons.

The bachelor's degree is modular. Within the modules, which build on one another, the course content is thematically summarized in different study and teaching forms. A fixed number of credit points as well as certain study and examination achievements must be achieved in each module.

With a view to your studies and the teaching profession you are aiming for, you should have a special interest in the Hispanic cultural area, its language and literature as well as a strong professional motivation. Previous experience in dealing with children and adolescents can be helpful both when deciding whether to study to become a teacher or to study. The language requirements include a sound knowledge of Spanish (level B2 of the European Framework of Reference). Therefore, the entry requirement for the Bachelor's degree in Spanish is the passing of a language proficiency test or proof of equivalent language skills. If you do not have the necessary language skills, you can acquire them in a one-year orientation phase at the University of Potsdam.Knowledge of Latin is recommended, which, in the absence of proof, can be acquired in specific courses “Latin for Romance Students”. To perfect your language skills, a longer stay or practical work in a Spanish-speaking country during your studies is recommended.

First of all, the bachelor's degree in Spanish serves to fundamentally expand your practical language skills. Your communication skills will be trained so that you can understand demanding texts and express yourself fluently and in detail, both orally and in writing. The course also teaches you the basics of Spanish literature, culture and linguistics. As part of the didactic training, you acquire basic knowledge, subject-specific methods of imparting knowledge and initial practical school skills. With the teaching profession-related bachelor's degree, you acquire the academic degree of the Bachelor of Education. This represents a first professional academic degree, which, however, does not yet qualify for the assumption of a teaching post. A master’s degree and preparatory service (legal clerkship) still have to be completed before the dream job of a teacher is achieved. However, the course also offers professional perspectives outside of the teaching profession, especially wherever skills relating to interculturality, understanding of culture (s), counter and subcultures, their media and forms of expression are required: in addition to an academic career, this applies to professions in the cultural sector , in the field of marketing and advertising, in the education sector, in foundations and associations or in cultural policy advice.
