Overview

In the bachelor's degree for the subject Latin, the basics of literature, culture and linguistics as well as subject didactics are laid and language skills are fundamentally expanded. In an introduction to classical philology, the students are made familiar with the philological tools, methods and working techniques and acquire a
basic knowledge of literary studies.

The focus of the course is the scientific analysis of Latin texts from prose and poetry. In the language exercises, the basic vocabulary is expanded and the basic grammatical knowledge (also based on the translation of German texts into Latin) is deepened. Translation skills are also improved in reading exercises.

In a language course, basic knowledge of Greek is imparted, which can be completed in a follow-up course up to the Graecum or supplemented by an event on Greek culture and literature. The subject didactics finally introduces the technique and method of teaching Latin and the area of ??language acquisition and teaching.

ENTRY REQUIREMENTS

For a successful degree it is important that you already have basic language skills. Therefore, the entry requirement for the Bachelor's degree in Latin is the passing of a language proficiency test or proof of equivalent language skills. If you do not have the necessary language skills, you can acquire them in a one-year orientation phase at the University of Potsdam.

If you are aiming for a teacher training course, you should be motivated to face the daily demands of the teaching profession. Previous experience in dealing with children and adolescents can be helpful both for the decision to study and for the study itself.

CAREER PROSPECTS

During the course you will acquire basic knowledge of the structures and history of the Latin language and the culture it dominates. After completing your studies, you will be able to analyze the forms of literary communication dealt with in Latin lessons at high school and describe them in their respective genre-specific, historical and cultural context. You will be made familiar with the basic forms of didactically appropriate teaching of language and knowledge in the context of school teaching practice.

With the degree you acquire the academic degree of Bachelor of Education. This represents a first professional academic degree, which, however, does not yet qualify for the assumption of a teaching post. A master’s degree and preparatory service (legal clerkship) have to be completed before becoming a teacher. Due to the professional and pedagogical skills acquired during the course, however, this bachelor's degree can also offer career prospects outside of the teaching profession, for example in publishing, in museums or in the fields of broadcasting, journalism, cultural and scientific journalism, adult education, tourism, media, development of educational software as well as in domestic and foreign cultural work.
