Geography ( human geography and physical geography ) is the science that deals with spatial structures and networks. In doing so, she examines both social and natural structures and processes in their spatial order, and she researches the relationship between society and its natural environment. She uses her knowledge of spatial structures to understand what is currently happening in our society. The many topics that are examined here (e.g. sustainability, flight and migration, urban development, interventions in the environment or natural hazards) are also exciting topics for geography lessons in schools. The Geographiedidaktik therefore being explored may be what concepts and methods geographical thinking in students created and strengthened; and finally, it provides answers to the question: How should geography lessons be designed so that students can get an adequate understanding of our present?

The subject of geography is offered in the bachelor's and master’s degree in teaching for secondary level I and II. The course is primarily aimed at those who are eligible for university entrance and who aim to become a teacher. The requirements for prospective students are based on the one hand on the general requirements for student teachers, ie the prospective students should have dealt with the requirements of a teaching profession and be interested in teaching and working with children and young people. On the other hand, the requirements are based on the technical focus of the geography degree. The students should be interested in current social developments, in topics of society-environment research and in natural processes. There are no special conditions that must be met separately
If you are aiming for a teacher training course, you should be motivated to face the daily demands of the teaching profession. Previous experience in dealing with children and adolescents can be helpful both for the decision to study and for the study itself.
Upon completion of the bachelor's degree, students should be able to recognize, explain and problematize physical-geographical and human-geographical systems (eco-zones, economic areas, etc.). You can address problem areas such as B. Discuss and assess natural risks, migration processes or sustainable development in terms of their geographical relevance. In addition, they are able to apply methods and applications from the field of geographic information and empirical research in order to analyze, evaluate and reflect on geographic issues. They are also familiar with current geographic didactic research.
The bachelor's and master's degree courses for teaching geography primarily prepare for a job in the school service. If the bachelor's and master's degrees as well as the legal clerkship are successfully completed, the graduates can work as a teacher. With the Bachelor of Education, a professional academic degree is achieved, which makes it possible to work in other mediating areas outside of school.
