Overview

Russian studies is a branch of Slavic studies, ie the science of Slavic languages, literatures and cultures. The focus of the course is on the Russian language as well as Russian literature and culture with their close transcultural relationships with European and non-European regions. In addition to Russian studies, the similarly structured bachelor's degree in Polish studies is also offered at the Institute for Slavic Studies at the University of Potsdam. The bachelor's degree in Russian Studies comprises three areas: language practice, linguistics, and literary and cultural studies. With the courses in the field of language practice you perfect your language skills with a view to listening and reading comprehension as well as oral and written communication. The aim is level C1 (GeR). The subject of linguistics is the systematic investigation and description of contemporary Russian language under grammatical, phonetic and vocabulary-related aspects. Other focal points are the peculiarities of intercultural communication, multilingualism and questions of translation theory as well as aspects of psycho- and neurolinguistics. As part of the literary and cultural studies training, you will acquire in-depth knowledge of the historical development and the present of Russian culture as well as the symbolic forms of cultural activity. In dealing critically with a wide range of text and image media, you will learn literary and cultural studies analysis methods as well as the associated writing techniques. In addition to literature, the other arts and media (film, theater, performance, visual arts, old and new media of everyday and popular culture) are also the subject of in-depth analyzes. The comparative contextualization of all study contents in Potsdam Russian Studies is central. It enables you to look at Russian culture with an open eye: not nationally narrowed or isolated,In order to develop your linguistic, technical and cultural competence, we also recommend a stay abroad during your studies. You should be prepared to spend a longer period of time in Russia (e.g. as part of a language course, study semester or internship). Our Russian partner universities offer you ideal study conditions abroad. The “Off to Practice” program at the University of Potsdam offers you a wide range of internship positions in Russia and Central and Eastern Europe .You can study Russian studies as a first or second subject in connection with a subject of your own choice as part of the two-subject bachelor's degree. In addition to another philological or cultural studies subject, economic and social science subjects such as business administration , public law or sociology can also be combined . Those interested in Russia can also choose the Interdisciplinary Russian Studies course at the University of Potsdam, designed as a single-subject bachelor's degree , which combines content from the fields of Russian studies, economics and social sciences.
