Overview

The subject of Italian Philology, also known as Italian Studies, is a branch of Romance Studies, ie the science of Romance languages, literatures and cultures. At the Institute for Romance Studies at the University of Potsdam, the bachelor's degree courses in French and Spanish Philology are also offered, with the three subjects being structured in a similar manner. The bachelor's degree in Italian Philology is divided into the areas of language acquisition as well as language, literature and cultural studies. Language acquisition is primarily linked to the goal of active oral and written command of the language. This is intensively and continuously trained in various exercises, including translation. In the courses on linguistics, an orientation framework for the scientific investigation of Italian is given. The analysis of the Romance languages ??and their texts takes place with the help of various theoretical approaches and methods, for example on the level of phonetics, morphology, syntax, semantics, lexicology or text linguistics.A special interest lies in the phenomena of language change, which is examined not only as a historical process of change, but also with regard to such phenomena as language contact, language mixing and language development. The training in literary studies includes courses with a focus on literary history, literary theory and text analysis. Under changing questions, production and reception conditions of Italian literature from the Middle Ages to the present are taken into account as well as genre and structural features. Cultural studies deals with the historical and contemporary cultural context to which the Italian language and literature belong. You should integrate a stay abroad during your studies. The Institute for Romance Studies currently maintains ERASMUS + programs and partnerships with, among others, Padua, Florence, Palermo. The Institute for Romance Studies can provide you with information on types of study abroad and scholarship options. The professional orientation is additionally promoted by organizing internships in the course of the studies.Italian Philology can be chosen as a first or second subject as part of the two-subject bachelor's degree and studied in conjunction with a subject of one's own choice. For example, other humanities, e.g. cultural studies or another philology, as well as subjects from the field of economics and social sciences can be combined.
