Overview

The subject of education at the University of Potsdam focuses on the individual development and learning of adolescents in the context of school and extracurricular facilities and family systems. The bachelor's degree in Educational Science conveys fundamental theories, methods and principles of educational science that can be applied to problem-solving professional fields and allow scientifically sound justifications and judgments there.The following problem areas are in the foreground:

  • Socialization and education from a historical and cross-cultural point of view
  • Learning, development and educational theories
  • Upbringing and personal development in the context of school and family
  • Professional action in educational contexts
  • Research methods in educational science

In addition to the introduction to the basic questions of educational thinking, the comparison of basic educational logic of action (e.g. educating, helping, mediating, advising), methods are taught and various educational fields of action are examined using theoretical models. The course content mainly includes questions of school and extracurricular socialization and formal and informal education. On the basis of findings from childhood and youth research as well as education and evaluation research, the processes of education, upbringing and socialization that are characteristic of this area, including historical change, are examined more closely. In an obligatory supervised internship, students acquire the competence to use educational knowledge in practical fields for interpretation and explanation.

PROGRAMME STRUCTURE

Educational science can be chosen as a first or second subject in the bachelor's degree. The standard period of study for education as a first or second subject is six semesters. The first subject comprises 90 credit points (CP) education (including bachelor thesis) and 30 CP key competencies (study plus). The second subject comprises 60 CP Educational Science. The bachelor's degree has a modular structure. Within the modules, the course content is thematically summarized in different study and teaching forms. A fixed number of credit points as well as certain study and examination achievements must be achieved in each module.

The bachelor's degree is based on principles and methods. Fundamental theories, research methods and methods of professional practice in educational science are conveyed, which can be used in professional fields to solve problems and there allow scientifically sound justifications and judgments. In addition to developing reflection and decision-making skills for pedagogical fields of action, the bachelor's degree also aims to expand personal, social and methodological skills.

The fields of action for educationalists focus primarily on the areas of adult education, extracurricular youth education, in-company (further) training and human resources as well as educational research.
