Cultural studies researches all material and symbolic dimensions of human cultures - the way people work and live, their ways of thinking and acting, values ??and spiritual expressions of life. As a humanities discipline, cultural studies combines the cultural aspects of art, literature, media, language and everyday life in an interdisciplinary subject. When studying cultural studies at the University of Potsdam, the focus is on the visual and literary arts in their contexts and differences. The focus is on Western European literatures since the Renaissance and the fine arts from the Middle Ages to the present day. The development of fashions and the staging of bodies in different epochs is also examined. In the arts, cultures communicate with one another in exemplary fashion, and they produce and model cultural identities and their cultural memory in an emphatic manner. In the course of study, the arts are considered in their interaction with one another, but also in their discursive entanglement with other cultural processes, such as everyday practices, cultures of emotions, mentalities and forms of knowledge. The course is therefore interdisciplinary and transdisciplinary and focuses on intermedia phenomena. It transcends the boundaries of traditional disciplines by taking their place, for example, by focusing on media, ethnic or gender differences and critically reflecting on everyday and scientific discourses.
If you want to study cultural studies successfully, you should show an interest in art and literature, media and language, but also be open to everyday cultural phenomena. The best basis for studying cultural studies is if you are curious, if you want to be inspired again and again by books, films, paintings or music and more about social and artistic practices. It is also important that you decide to study a foreign language when you apply.Proof of a university entrance qualification is required for the bachelor's degree at the University of Potsdam.
