The subject of history in the Master of Education course is devoted to the methodical research of historical events, people, objects, structures and processes and familiarizes with questions, methods, theories and approaches of historical research. On the one hand, the students acquire specialist knowledge about central aspects of the three great historical epochs of antiquity, the Middle Ages and the modern age and, on the other hand, they learn methodological and theoretical skills in dealing with the relics of the past. The focus is on dealing with historical sources, which are checked for authenticity and whose significance the students analyze and interpret.
While the focus of the Bachelor’s program is on the two specialist subjects, the Master of Education’s focus is more on educational sciences and subject didactics. The modules of subject didactics convey the ability to transform subject-specific questions and research results into objects of historical learning in a way that is appropriate for the target group. The starting point are characteristic topics of school lesson series, on the basis of which the students get to know the overarching principles of dealing with historical objects. On this basis, approaches and methods of historical learning and teaching as well as their practical implementation in history lessons are discussed.
Two subjects are studied in the teaching post for grammar schools and comprehensive schools. In addition to history, the students also take a second subject and educational sciences. The practical semester is a central component of the course.
