Meteorology is the predominantly physical-chemical-oriented natural science that deals with the condition, composition and movement of the atmosphere. The classic goal of meteorology is to understand weather and to predict it. State-of-the-art devices with radar and laser technology, as well as satellites and radiosondes, support the observation of atmospheric processes and provide a large amount of measurement data. After processing the measurement data with statistical methods, these data are used as starting fields in mathematical-physical models for forecasting. The results are interpreted by weather forecasters and with downstream statistical models.
In another classic sub-area of ??meteorology, the past and future development of the earth system with the significant exchange processes between the spheres involved (atmosphere, oceans, ice surfaces, biosphere and soil) are modeled (climatology).
A well-founded basic training in the subjects of physics, mathematics and electronic data processing takes place at the beginning of the course. Based on this, there is a specialization in the sub-areas of meteorology. The skills of observation, analysis, model creation, operation and evaluation learned during the course are fundamental for many professions in the modern working world.
