As a structural science or the science of formal systems, mathematics aims to prove statements about mathematical structures and objects according to the principle of logic. In applied mathematics in particular, experimentation and empirical knowledge are aids and impetus for formulating such statements. On the basis of such statements or basic assumptions (axioms) assumed to be true, theories should also be built up that can be transferred and applied to as many different real conditions as possible.
In order to be able to make these generally valid assumptions, basic techniques of mathematical work are taught using analytical, algebraic and algorithmic methods. Based on this, there is a specialization, for example in “Algebra, Number Theory and Logic”, “Stochastics”, “Analysis and Differential Equations” or “Geometry and Topology”. The choice of a minor subject - usually physics, computer science or economics - on the other hand, an internship in programming, industry or tutoring are also an integral part of the course.
Overall, the students should develop and expand analytical thinking skills. In addition, problem-solving skills should be imparted on an abstract level.
