Scandinavian Studies deals with the literatures, languages ??and cultures as well as the history of the Scandinavian countries. In Bonn, the focus of the subject in teaching and research is on the culture and religion of the Viking Age, the Scandinavian Middle Ages, literary modernity and the interrelationships between literature and other media. In addition, language skills are taught in the respective national languages. Language courses are offered in Danish, Norwegian and Swedish.
The subject pursues a comparative perspective that takes the entire Scandinavian region into account. The aim is to understand the (socio-) cultural developments and processes in the Scandinavian countries and, in particular, to follow the German-Scandinavian cultural transfer from a historical and current perspective. The aim is to impart intercultural competence, which, in addition to knowledge of literary and cultural history as well as methodological and subject-specific skills, also includes active language skills.
