Musicology deals with the research, analysis and reflection of music in its historical and cultural diversity and regards music as an aesthetic, socio-cultural and historical object.
The aim of the course is the ability to perceive, analyze and describe musical phenomena in a differentiated manner and to classify them critically in the cultural, social, historical and media conditions of their and our times. Accordingly, research is carried out not only “about” music, but also “through” music - for example into globalization, industrialization and subjectification processes. In addition, broad knowledge in the field of general music history (including an emphasis on popular music forms) and music theory as well as historical composition theory is imparted.
The orientation of the course at the University of Bonn is characterized by the integration of sound studies approaches that examine sound in its historical, media and cultural specifics.
