Media studies deals with the theory, history, aesthetics, reception and use of media. The focus of the course is on the media genres of film, television, radio, the Internet and the broad field of digital media. The areas of cultural studies media and film studies and social science-oriented communication studies are cooperatively interlinked in Bonn. From a cultural studies perspective, the historical development and change of media can be dealt with with a view to cultural, economic, political and social processes. On the other hand, the social conditions, consequences and meanings of media, public and interpersonal communication are made accessible from a social science perspective.
In addition to a compulsory external internship, the course also offers a wide-ranging practical component in which insights into media production in the areas of audio / radio, film / video, online and photography (analog and digital) can be provided, which can be used in the theoretical discussion of flow into the respective media. Graduates of the degree program can perceive, understand, and critically think the results of current media developments and have acquired specialist knowledge that enables them to independently ask further questions about media as objects of scientific reflection.
