Italian Studies deals with the Italian language that emerged from Latin, its special characteristics, literatures and diverse culture. During the course of study, practical language skills are deepened and content from the fields of linguistics, literary studies and cultural studies are taught.
The field of linguistics includes consideration of the origin, development and current state of the Italian language (phonology, word formation, syntax, etc.). The students also get an overview of other sub-disciplines of linguistics as well as their theories and methods.
Literary studies offer an insight into the history of literature in the respective language area from the Middle Ages to the present (epochs, genres, authors, works, etc.). She also deals with theories, methods and models related to Italian literature. Furthermore, students get to know methods and tools of literary research.
Cultural studies deals with theories, methods and models with a view to the different cultures, but also with country-specific orientation knowledge. For the Italian-speaking area, political systems, economic and social structures as well as media landscapes and educational systems in the past and present are considered.
