The interdisciplinary M.Sc. Mechanics deepens and expands the mathematical and engineering knowledge and skills acquired in the bachelor's degree as well as the application of methods of mechanics to solve natural and engineering problems. Cross-departmental civil engineering and geodesy, mechanical engineering, mathematics and physics are linked at the interface between abstract mathematical and application-oriented engineering issues. With an extensive elective area along the various subject areas, the course can be tailored to the individual interests of the students. A mentor system serves as a supervisory support for the decisive creation of personal examination and study plans.



The graduates of the Master Mechanics course cover the specific needs at the interface between an abstract mathematical and an application-oriented engineering education. The possible fields of activity of the graduates are, for example, research and development departments with a mechanical-theoretical focus.

Due to the higher mechanics and mathematics-oriented course, graduates of the Master Mechanics course are qualified to work as mechanical engineers in a managerial position, among other things

  • in the classic areas of mechanical engineering (automotive industry and suppliers, plastic and rubber products, crash simulations, acoustics, power plants, reliability, etc.) and
  • civil engineering (steel construction, soil mechanics and porous materials, fatigue of materials, non-linear shells and plates, fracture mechanical problems in construction, operational strength, etc.),
  • as well as in the fields of materials science (micromechanical modeling and optimization of materials, microsystem technology, nanotechnology, coupled material properties, etc.),
  • space travel (fluid mechanics problems, shape optimization, dynamics of multi-body systems),
  • environmental technology (continuum mechanical field problems of open and closed systems, energy transport, thermomechanical and chemomechanical coupling),
  • biomechanics (kinematics of joints, modeling of tissue and arteries, blood flow, etc.),
  • the economy (transfer of optimization and approximation algorithms)
  • and in a scientific position in universities and research institutions.

In addition to studying, it is important to gain your own practical experience in relevant institutions at an early stage, to demonstrate your general suitability for practice and to establish contacts. The prospect of a good position is increased by the willingness to move professionally, also abroad. A good command of the English language is particularly recommended if you have an international focus.
