The course deals with the basics of text linguistics and writing studies, also taking into account culture-specific differences. In the first part, it therefore aims at deepened competencies in the research areas of writing research, variation linguistics, and text and discourse linguistics. The special profile of this linguistics master's lies in its subsequent compulsory elective areas, in which these basics can be deepened in two directions:
Focus on “text competence”, especially with regard to the context “language at work” or “German as a foreign language / German as a second language”. Both focal points also work in a project-oriented manner, and an internship must be included in both.
The professional fields of application for graduates of the degree program are wide-ranging. There are mainly employment opportunities at universities, in literary or linguistic teaching and research as well as in language teaching in private schools. Other areas of activity can be found in school or specialist book editorial offices, in publishing houses (e.g. in the editing department), in radio, television and newspaper editorial offices, in PR and advertising agencies, in libraries and archives, at international organizations, Goethe Institutes and in cultural area (e.g. as a dramaturge or dramaturge at the theater). With additional business management qualifications, they can also work in commercial enterprises (e.g. in sales and marketing or in human resources). It is therefore important, in addition to studying, to gather your own practical experience in relevant institutions at an early stage, to prove your general suitability for practice and to establish contacts. The prospect of a good position is increased by the willingness to move professionally, also abroad. A good command of the English language is particularly recommended if you have an international focus.
