The master’s degree is the completion of a scientific physics education. The 4-semester course allows graduates of a 6-semester bachelor's degree in physics, as well as lateral entrants, the opportunity to obtain a master's degree in physics. Building on a 3-year bachelor's degree in natural sciences, students have the opportunity to deepen their degree in general physics according to their level of knowledge. An extensive free elective field of physics allows you to acquire further knowledge in an area of ??interest of your own choice, in which you may want to write your thesis.
In the Profile study area, on the one hand, students can take modules outside the subject culture of physics and, on the other hand, get to know the working groups in the department. This serves the profiling and orientation of the students and helps with the selection of the work area in which the research block and the master's thesis are to be carried out.
Participation in current research areas of the working groups takes place in the research block. It is formed from the work group internship, the research internship and the master's thesis. The central element in the master’s course is the master’s thesis, in which the ability to conduct independent research is acquired by solving a current problem.
If there is a corresponding demand, it is possible that the course offerings and the study achievements take place or can be provided entirely in English.
In the free elective physics, between three and six modules from the research areas of the working groups should be taken. These can be summarized as follows: biological and statistical physics, advanced experimental physics, advanced theoretical physics, methods of physics, optics and spectroscopy, condensed matter physics, systems and applications.
The candidates are free to choose their field of work for the master’s thesis, depending on the possibilities. Typically, a working group is found independently and a topic is selected in consultation with the supervisor. You can choose from a wide range:

The master’s degree in physics prepares students for independent and self-reliant work as a physicist in business, industry, in scientific research institutes and in public administration, as well as for further doctoral studies.
Experience has shown that the possible professional fields of a physicist are very broad and often extend far into neighboring scientific and other disciplines.
Proof of graduation
a) a relevant bachelor's degree in physics or
b) a physics-related course of study
with 180 credit points or proof of a comparable domestic or foreign professional university degree.
If this is not yet available, a transcript of records with a calculated average grade based on at least 80% of the credit points required for the Bachelor's degree can be submitted.
A course is physics-related if at least 60 credit points have been achieved in physical subjects, 30 of which are in the field of modern physics.
The examination board can combine the admission with the condition that additional study achievements and / or examinations of a maximum of 30 credit points are achieved. In this case, the course can be extended accordingly.
Knowledge of English at level B2 of the “Common European Framework of Reference for Languages” is recommended .
Direct admission is granted if the admission requirements are fully met.
