Overview

In the “Economic Geography” master’s course, students acquire in-depth knowledge of geography. The teaching content relates to content-related competencies and methodological skills for economic geography and its various sub-areas. The students acquire specialist knowledge and methodological skills in order to be able to describe, analyze, explain, evaluate and forecast socio-economic processes from a multi-scalar, theory-based perspective. The focus is on the acquisition of theory-related analytical knowledge and the strengthening of job-related problem-solving skills. In combined technical and methodological modules with project character, integrated work processes are learned in ideal-typical sequences.

ENTRY REQUIREMENTS

Proof of completion of a relevant bachelor's degree in the field of geography, economics, social sciences (or thematically similar courses) or proof of a comparable domestic or foreign professional university degree. If this is not yet available, a transcript of records with a calculated average grade based on at least 80% of the credit points required for the bachelor's degree can be submitted.

Sufficient competencies are provided for thematically similar courses if the corresponding degree contains at least 90 credit points in methodical and technical basics of geography and its auxiliary sciences (cartography, empirical social research, statistics).

The examination board can combine the admission with the condition that additional study achievements and / or examinations of a maximum of 30 credit points are achieved. In this case, the course can be extended accordingly.

Proof of course-specific knowledge and skills:

Knowledge of English ,  level B1 of  the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages. 

Approval mode:

Direct admission is granted if the admission requirements are fully met.

 

Language level B1

Language level B1 of the "Common European Framework of Reference for Languages ??of the Council of Europe" - independent language use - is proven by fulfilling one of the following criteria:

  • School certificates proving the foreign language for at least 4 years. Evidence of 3 years is sufficient if the foreign language has been used up to the degree that entitles you to university entrance. In both of these cases, the final grade or, if applicable, the average grade of the last two years of the language course must be at least a German grade of 4 (sufficient) or 5 points. You can find out how you can prove the foreign language skills you have acquired in school lessons

If you cannot prove the language level from your school lessons, the following alternatives apply:

  • A course of at least two years at a secondary educational institution in which the language to be verified is the primary language of instruction
  • or one of the following language certificates (comparable certificates are subject to a case-by-case examination)

 

CAREER PROSPECTS

The skills and knowledge acquired in the geographical specialist and method modules are supplemented and deepened by external elective modules and profile modules as well as by an external internship that additionally strengthens professional orientation and can be used in the following professional fields in particular:

  • (regional) economic policy and economic development,
  • Innovation and knowledge management,
  • International management,
  • Science, research and research management,
  • Spatial planning in the broadest sense.
