The English-language master's program “North American Studies” deals with the complex literatures and cultures of North America, especially the USA and Canada, but also the Caribbean and Latin America, and provides interdisciplinary teaching and research.
Central aspects of the investigation are the multifaceted interculturality of the respective countries, which are analyzed with the help of newly developed methods and disciplines, including national and international borders. In addition to literature, you will gain insights into cultural phenomena such as TV series, films, images, music, but also into political and historical developments.
Students also get to know the perspectives of Gender Studies, Ethnic Studies and Media Studies.
The course qualifies you for activities in research and teaching in the field of North American literary and cultural studies, in editorial professions (journalism, publishing), mediation functions in the intercultural field (language and cultural communication), professions in administrative services and science management, work in the foreign service ( EU, UN, embassies) and in international corporations (public relations, management)
Proof of a professional university degree in the fields of American Studies, British Studies or Anglophone Studies or proof of a comparable domestic or foreign professional university degree.
If proof of the first degree is not yet available, a transcript of records with a calculated average grade based on at least 80% of the credit points required for the bachelor's degree can be submitted.
In this course of study, at least 30 CP (or equivalent results from a non-modularized course) should have been achieved in the above-mentioned areas, of which at least 15 CP should relate to North America-specific content. If the North American-specific content is not evident from the certificate or the transcript of records, proof of this must be provided by the applicant in a suitable manner.
The examination board can combine the admission with the condition that additional study achievements and / or examinations of a maximum of 12 credit points are achieved. In this case, the course can be extended accordingly
