German linguistics examines the German language - using the knowledge and methods of modern international linguistics. The characteristics of German are analyzed on a structural (syntax, semantics, phonology, morphology) and on a functional (pragmatics) level. Furthermore, cognitive, social and historical aspects of German play a special role in this course. All of these questions are dealt with under the light of applicability in a wide range of professional fields.
The four-semester master’s course “Linguistics: Cognition and Communication” aims to combine theoretical with practical knowledge. The general goal then is to solve a number of problems through scientific analysis. The knowledge previously acquired in the Bachelor's degree is expanded and deepened in this degree.
The profile of the master’s degree is particularly geared towards the research focal points and activities established in Marburg: Accordingly, the degree program provides for the possibility of focussing in the areas of language-theoretical-cognitive modeling and language-dynamic analysis of varieties of German . This focus is integrated into the two main research areas of the participating institutes: experimental, clinical and cognitive neurosciences and cultural dynamics .
In addition to this research-related profiling, the course in Marburg allows the subject to be studied in all its breadth. The profile of German linguistics historically encompasses all language stages from the late Middle Ages to the present day as well as focal points in different systematic areas of historical linguistic and language usage research.
With regard to the immediate entry into professional life, past experience has already shown that graduates of German studies with a good linguistic qualification have very good chances on the job market. In the case of linguistics, it can be stated that they have identifiable, albeit in part only emerging, non-academic fields of application. These include, for example:
The course aims at competencies in the fields of application mentioned, but without forgetting the orientation towards theoretical and academic competencies appropriate to the master’s degree. Due to its practical research orientation, the course offers gifted students the ideal preparation for a doctoral degree.
