The research-oriented consecutive master’s degree in Islamic Studies provides you with in-depth knowledge of the normative religious source texts of Islam and their interpretations, the history of Islamic religion, culture and ideas from early Islam to the present day, as well as the diverse manifestations and interpretations of Islam in contemporary Muslim communities and societies. In addition to the historical and cultural education, central topics are current discussions about Muslims and Islam in Europe, Islamic movements and forms of political Islam. Another focus is current developments in Turkey.
The expansion of active language skills in Arabic or Turkish as important source languages ??of Islamic societies, as well as the possible acquisition of additional language skills in Persian or Turkish, form the basis for academic work.
In addition to deepening subject-specific knowledge of Islamic studies and practical language skills, methodological, in particular cultural, religious and social science approaches to the research fields are the focus of teaching.
Graduates of the “Islamic Studies” master’s course have access to a wide range of possible professional fields due to the professional, practical language and intercultural skills acquired during their studies, as well as the ability to adequately convey independently developed research results. This primarily includes academic activities at universities and other research institutions. Further fields of activity are in adult education, in international organizations and cultural institutions, in cultural mediation, public relations, in ministries and authorities, in journalism and in specialist libraries.
Proof of completion of a specific bachelor's degree in "Islamic Studies" or evidence of completing a relevant bachelor's degree in the field of Oriental, Islamic or Middle Eastern studies or evidence of a comparable domestic or foreign professional university degree.
If proof of the first degree is not yet available, a transcript of records with a calculated average grade based on at least 80% of the credit points required for the bachelor's degree can be submitted.
The examination board can combine the admission with the condition that additional study achievements and / or examinations of a maximum of 30 credit points are achieved. In this case, the course can be extended accordingly.
