Overview

The best way to find out more about the course content is to use the annotated course catalog , which can be found on the Internet at hu.berlin/vorlesungsverzeichnis . The module descriptions, the curriculum and further details can be found in the study and examination regulations , which can be found on the Internet at www.amb.hu-berlin.de, No. 84/2018 . The subject advisory service is also available to you (see below: Addresses).

The Deaf Studies mono bachelor's degree provides scientifically sound professional skills for educational, therapeutic, advisory and practical language activities with people with hearing impairments. It also serves as a targeted preparation for master’s courses in the field of interpreting for sign languages, rehabilitation pedagogy and educational sciences.

The focus of the research interest is on the community of sign language users and their culture. A correspondingly large area is occupied by training in German sign language, the mastery of which is essential for any direct activity with people with hearing impairments. In addition, knowledge of the particularities of the disability as well as the social, communicative, linguistic-cultural and institutional framework of life for people with hearing disabilities should be acquired. The course promotes internationality, as modules and module components can be completed abroad and international research in the field of “Deaf Studies” plays a role.

The subject Deaf Studies is new and so far only established in Anglo-Saxon countries. The course offered at the Humboldt University is the only one of its kind in Germany and is attended by both hearing and deaf students. The teaching staff is also composed of hearing and deaf lecturers. In line with the international profile of the Deaf Studies research area, the department has numerous contacts with foreign institutions. Deaf Studies is also the only course that prepares specifically for the Master’s course in Sign Language Interpreting, which is also carried out at the Institute for Rehabilitation Sciences.
