Overview

Teaching focus on human diseases : Our range of courses is inherently interdisciplinary and the members of the medical and mathematical and natural science faculties involved are established in research into human diseases in the context of basic research and clinical research. Students from various bachelor programs encounter a comprehensive and integrated curriculum in molecular, biological and medical life sciences. This includes a wide range of courses in clinical & theoretical medicine, biology & biochemistry as well as a mature range of methods.

Research focus : Internationally recognized scientists with expertise in basic biomedical research and clinical research support the study program and will provide fascinating insights into biomedical research. The special research areas of the HHU such as molecular & clinical hepatology, cardiovascular biology and membranes are represented in the course as well as the research areas of infectiology, oncology, diabetology, stem cell research and translational & cellular neurosciences.

PROGRAMME STRUCTURE

At the beginning of the 1st semester there is the compulsory module "Molecular Biomedicine". This compulsory module lasts 2 semesters and creates a uniform basis for graduates from various bachelor's programs.

3 Master's modules follow in the further course of the course. The master's modules are compulsory elective modules that are assigned to 4 different focuses:

  • Focus A: Cell & Organ Biology (Oncology, Hepatology, Neurobiology, Genetics, Environment & Age Research)
  • Focus B: Immunology, Infectiology, Liver Damage & Regeneration
  • Focus C: Metabolism, Metabolic & Cardiovascular Diseases
  • Focus D: Bioinformatics, Structure & Diagnostics

In the 3rd semester, students complete a 12-week project internship and then an 8-week pilot project. In the project internship, students are entrusted with a research project in one of the working groups of the master’s program in Molecular Biomedicine, which they work on under direct supervision. A stay abroad is ideal in this phase of your studies. The pilot project is also an internship and serves as a preliminary to the master's thesis. At the end of the pilot project, students draft a concept for their master's thesis and draft a project outline for this.

In the 4th semester, an experimental master's thesis (6 months) in the field of molecular biomedicine is prepared.

ENTRY REQUIREMENTS

Access to the application process for a study place is available to anyone who has completed a previous scientific degree of at least 6 semesters of standard study time with a final grade of 2.5 or better (or will soon complete it). In addition, the following credit points (CP) must have been acquired by attending lectures (V) and internships (P) in the course of the previous course:

  • 7 CP in Cell and Molecular Biology (V, P)
  • 13 CP in Biochemistry and / or Physiology (V, P).

CAREER PROSPECTS

The aim of the two-year Master's degree in Molecular Biomedicine at HHU Düsseldorf is to train a new generation of biomedical scientists with excellent training in an interdisciplinary environment. With a profound understanding of the molecular function and dysfunction of cells, tissues and organs, new insights into disease mechanisms and their diagnosis are sought.
