Building on basic knowledge in economics and chemistry, the master's degree in business chemistry leads to a second professional qualification in 3 semesters. In compulsory and compulsory elective modules, students are enabled to work on issues scientifically at a high technical level and to critically evaluate results. The competencies acquired in this way enable you to do a doctorate in chemistry or economics. But they also open up interesting professional fields at the interface between chemistry and business in the chemical-related sectors.
The training is based on the research fields that are worked on at the HHU, without losing the connection to professional practice. On the chemistry side, for. For example, you can choose between biological chemistry, molecular catalysis, modern materials or excited state processes. On the economic side, you can choose from among other things marketing, sustainability management or company auditing and controlling.
In the 3-semester master’s course, training takes place at a high scientific level with close reference to the current orientation of chemical and economic research at Heinrich Heine University.
In addition to the basic modules with advanced aspects of the core subjects of inorganic, organic and physical chemistry, business administration and economics, a significant proportion of specialized elective modules make the course largely project-oriented and research-related, whereby the reference to professional practice is always kept in mind.
According to their talents and inclinations, the students are enabled to work on questions in a scientifically appropriate manner and to critically evaluate results. The master’s course is not designed for training in just one specialist area, but rather should enable graduates to familiarize themselves quickly and efficiently with each specialist area on the basis of a solid foundation.
With the course-accompanying module examinations and the final master’s thesis, the examination organization corresponds to that of the bachelor’s program.
The master’s degree can either be started in a summer semester or a winter semester. Depending on the start of the course, there are different course plans:
The consecutive master’s degree in business chemistry at Heinrich Heine University builds on a previous successful bachelor’s degree in business chemistry and is aimed at academically interested students. Graduates from other bachelor's degree programs (including B. Sc. Chemistry and B. Sc. Business Administration) generally do not meet the requirements for this Master’s degree.
The master’s degree in business chemistry is recognized at home and abroad as a second degree and opens up a wide range of opportunities. A good half of our graduates switch directly to professional practice, the rest begin a doctoral degree and thus strive for a qualification for high-level management tasks in the chemical or chemical-related industry.
Due to their special qualifications, graduates in business chemistry are often employed in interface positions in chemical and pharmaceutical companies, but also in chemical trading and management consulting. There they can use their chemical expertise to make commercial decision-making processes particularly profitable.
Due to the growing functional specialization, e.g. in production and R&D controlling, graduates of business chemistry can also be deployed where, in addition to a competent use of economic instruments, a scientific way of working is advantageous in the planning and implementation of projects.
