The advanced master's degree, Master of Science in Public Health (M. Sc.), Trains health care experts who are capable of identifying and evaluating health problems at the population group level and developing and implementing practical measures to solve them.
The further education course can be completed part-time, within 4 semesters up to 8 semesters. The lessons have a modular structure and consist of an introductory, deepening and specialization phase and are offered in the form of courses of 2-5 days each while working.
According to international guidelines, the time required is 1,800 working hours (60 performance or ECTS points). The course extends over 4 semesters and is offered in the form of courses of 2 to 5 days each (teaching blocks and weekend events) as well as guided self-study while working.
The maximum duration in which the course must be completed is 4 years.
The course contains an introductory phase , an in-depth phase and a specialization phase . In the latter, students can choose between the two main subjects “Epidemiology and Prevention” and “Health Services Research and Health Economic Evaluation”.
The courses are combined into 10 modules, each of which ends with an examination. The master's thesis is written during the specialization phase. Most of the lessons are held in German, but some courses are held in English (and this trend is rising).
Students enrolled at Heinrich Heine University have free access to the university's usual public facilities. There are costs of 8,000 euros for the entire continuing education course, which are charged during the course.
This goal is achieved through interdisciplinary, practice and research-oriented teaching. The course is characterized by its particular proximity to medical research and the organization and practice of health care.
