This four-semester course with a Master of Arts (MA) degree is admission-free with "Proof of special aptitude" (application and aptitude assessment take place directly at Heinrich Heine University) and can be started in the summer and winter semesters.

The master’s degree in Italian: Language, Media, Translation with an integrated semester abroad at the University of Turin conveys in-depth skills in central areas of Italian applied linguistics and is characterized by a consistently contrasting focus and a strong practical component. The focus of the content of this master’s course is chosen so that the study of Italian is anchored in three socially relevant and application-related thematic fields, which at the same time represent the intended range of occupational fields of the course: foreign language didactics and learner linguistics (module: conveying language), media with reference to Italy (module: language and media), translation in different contexts (module:
Tedesco-Italiano: un confronto ). The students acquire and train practical skills in a practical language module (Lingua - Testi - Contesti) and an 8-week practical phase (internship).
Finally, in a freely configurable area (interdisciplinary compulsory elective area), the students sharpen their profile through individual course combinations.


The master's program in Italian: Language, Media, Translation at Heinrich Heine University is primarily aimed at bachelor graduates with a focus on Italian linguistics and with a knowledge of Italian at level C1 (European Framework of Reference). Interested parties with an Italian migration background are particularly suitable for this course.


In the master’s degree in Italian: Language, Media, Translation, students train foreign language didactic skills, market-oriented literary and specialist translation and the creative use of (digital) media.

Italian: language, media translation qualifies students for the following three professional fields:

  • Foreign language didactics (textbook and dictionary publishers with foreign language components, adult education, country and culture-specific training in companies)
  • Translation (literary translation into German, specialist translation, creation of translation software)
  • Media (intercultural communication in the context of public relations for companies, publishers and cultural institutions).
