In contrast to traditional biology courses, the modules in the basic phase do not differentiate between botany, zoology, microbiology, etc. Instead, the students work out the basic principles of biology, which sometimes lead to similar and sometimes very different solutions for different organisms. On the one hand, the course imparts in-depth knowledge of biology including the mastery of important experimental, mathematical, statistical and IT methods. The main goal of the course, however, is to enable students to combine biological and quantitative-analytical thinking. The integrative design of the modules imparts the necessary quantitative skills in biological contexts. Almost all modules include internships or exercises, to internalize the lecture content in an application-related manner. The 4-year variant (quantBio +) gives students more freedom when planning a stay abroad and offers space for additional, intensive research experience. The Bachelor's degree in Quantitative Biology prepares its graduates specifically for work in modern biological and medical research.


In the first five semesters, interdisciplinary modules convey an understanding of biological mechanisms, phenomena and concepts, combined with the relevant physical and chemical basics. In addition to teaching basic experimental techniques, particular emphasis is placed on mathematical modeling, biostatistics and bioinformatics. This broad integration of theoretical-quantitative methods distinguishes the course from other biology courses. Before the end of the basic phase, successful students can switch to the 4-year variant Quantitative Biology PLUS (quantBio +) if they wish. The 4-year variant gives students additional opportunities to stay abroad and enables them to


Entrance requirement for the Bachelor's degree in Quantitative Biology is a general university entrance qualification (Abitur). The course has restricted admission (local numerus clausus) and is taught in English. Applicants who have obtained their school leaving certificate outside the EU must prove that they have sufficient knowledge of English (level B2). The application for a study place is made online using the DoSV procedure. Note the registration deadlines


Quantitative Biology is an interdisciplinary course that includes both biological and quantitative-analytical elements (mathematical modeling, biostatistics, bioinformatics). The quantitative skills imparted in this way are only marginal in traditional biology courses, but are of central importance in modern biological and biomedical research. An important professional field for graduates of Quantitative Biology is therefore research and development work in the life science and health sectors, both in industry and at public research institutions and universities. However, areas such as environmental biology, the pharmaceutical industry, hygiene or water management are also open to graduates. The degree qualifies for admission to advanced master's courses in biology, but also, for example, for the master's courses “Molecular Biomedicine”, “Translational Neuroscience”, “Industrial Pharmacy” and “Artificial Intelligence and Data Science” at HHU. The successfully completed 4-year variant also opens up the possibility of a 1-year master’s course or the direct start of a doctoral program in corresponding graduate schools.
