Overview

This six-semester course is offered jointly by the economics and mathematics and natural sciences faculties of the HHU.

Answering economically relevant questions increasingly requires a combination of mathematical, business and economic knowledge. The bachelor's degree in Finance and Actuarial Mathematics provides interdisciplinary basics for solving complex problems that arise from economic issues. One focus is on the areas of finance and insurance. 
In particular, prospective students should be addressed, for whom a pure mathematics degree offers too little practical relevance and a pure economics / business administration degree offers too little methodological content.

The interdisciplinary concept offers students many advantages. The combination of extensive quantitative training and the treatment of practice-relevant topics enables graduates in a special way to take on demanding tasks in business and science. Thanks to the interdisciplinary orientation, students can also qualify for master’s courses in both economics and mathematics with their degree. This opens up an unusually large number of opportunities to continue to qualify after graduation.

PROGRAMME STRUCTURE

The course consists of courses from the Mathematical Institute and the Faculty of Business and Economics. Modules specially developed for this course ensure a thematic focus.

The course consists of the following types of modules:

  • Compulsory modules from the mathematics course (58 ECTS), e.g. analysis, linear algebra, stochastics, numerics ...
  • Compulsory modules from the economics courses (61 ECTS), e.g. econometrics, microeconomics, finance and corporate management, accounting ...
  • Tailor-made compulsory modules (21 ECTS): one module each to deepen the areas of finance and insurance from the fields of mathematics and economics
  • Elective modules (12 ECTS): Modules that can be selected from the mathematical and / or economic offer
  • Further modules (16 ECTS): A joint seminar, a jour fixe with practitioners, insurance law and key qualifications
  • Bachelor thesis (12 ECTS)

ENTRY REQUIREMENTS

The entry requirement for the Bachelor's degree in Finance and Actuarial Mathematics is general or relevant subject-specific university entrance qualification.

CAREER PROSPECTS

The combination of specialist knowledge and quantitative methods for solving practically relevant problems offers students excellent career prospects in large parts of the economy. Further specializations in the context of a master’s degree can be flexibly oriented towards the interests of the graduates. Graduates are open to master's courses from both areas due to the roughly equal proportion of events in mathematics and economics.
