The political science supplementary subject introduces the fundamentals and essential research results of the subject. The focus in Düsseldorf is on the analysis of specific political systems and processes, the cross-border comparison of political systems, political action within the European Union and questions of international relations. As a supplementary subject, political science in Düsseldorf is designed as part of a multiple degree course and can only be studied in combination with another core subject.

PROGRAMME STRUCTURE

You start in the first semester with a combination of lectures and exercises. In the lecture you will receive an introductory overview of political science in all its breadth, in the exercise you will discuss the classics of political theory. In the second semester you combine a lecture on the political system in Germany with an exercise in the analysis of political systems. At the end of your first year of study, you will take a final module examination for these events, which together form the basic module of political science. In parallel to this introduction to the content, you will learn the basics of the qualitative and quantitative methods of the subject in the first year of study.
From the second year of study you are free to choose your courses. You take a total of nine courses from three sub-areas of political science, namely Europe and international affairs, systems and structures as well as areas and processes of political science.

ENTRY REQUIREMENTS

General university entrance qualification (Abitur, etc.) is a general prerequisite for taking up a degree in the BA supplementary subject Political Science. Extensive knowledge of current affairs and a good knowledge of English are an advantage for later studies.
The BA minor in Political Science can only be studied in combination with a core subject offered at the Philosophical Faculty of Heinrich Heine University Düsseldorf. Therefore, please also note the entry requirements for your chosen major.
