Overview

The subject of media and cultural studies deals with the interactions between media-mediated communication processes and cultural orders. The questions of media and cultural studies thus include media history, media theory and the analysis of individual media. Specifically, this means for the course of studies: the investigation of the cultural mediation of media processes, film and television studies, acoustic studies, pop culture research, game studies, the analysis of media-cultural knowledge regimes, research on digitality and digitization, the investigation of the connections between technology and culture and its politicization, gender studies and performance studies

The course begins with a coordinated introduction to the fields of media, culture and aesthetics. The second semester is followed by in-depth courses on individual subject areas such as film studies, aesthetic theory and theater studies. They are accompanied by professionally oriented practical courses, for example in the areas of creative writing and film / video production. At the same time, the preoccupation with questions of comparative and intercultural media culture studies begins.

In the third semester, the “Media, Everyday Life, Society” module includes events on gender studies, media materials and television. In the series of lectures “Media and Cultural Professions”, guest lectures from industry, art and culture show paths into the profession. In the fourth and fifth semesters, questions of media ethics and research methods are in the foreground, as well as the analysis of specific media forms and networks. In addition, additional practical courses are attended, in particular in the areas of internet journalism, new media, radio and public relations.

Finally, a constitutive component of the course is the joint conception, planning and implementation of a project work. The faculty has a professionally equipped media laboratory to implement its own radio and video projects. Close cooperation with media, theater and art institutions in the region, including the North Rhine-Westphalia Art Collection, tanzhaus nrw, the NRW Forum, the museum kunst palast, the Forum Free Theater (FFT) and the Schauspielhaus Düsseldorf practice-oriented research.

During the lecture-free period, a twelve-week internship is required. Attending advanced language courses makes it possible to demonstrate knowledge of two modern foreign languages ??at the end of the course. During your studies, you have the option of acquiring part of the transcripts at one of our partner universities abroad or at another location. Cultivated partnerships exist with universities in Ankara, Davis (USA), Reading (GB), Istanbul, Lisbon, Louvain-la-Neuve, Nantes, Neuchâtel, Seville, Thessaloniki, Utrecht, Linz and Vienna.
